Michaël Hassan is Managing Director, General Counsel and Secretary at Sagard and joined the firm in 2023. Michaël is responsible for overseeing all legal and regulatory affairs and compliance at the firm. In this role, he has a particular focus on fund governance, fundraising, M&A, transaction execution and other firm-wide initiatives. Michaël is a member of the Executive Committee and is based in Montréal, Canada.
Prior to Sagard, Michaël was with PSP Investments, one of the largest pension investment managers in the world, for 17 years, where he most recently was Managing Director, Divisional General Counsel and Head of Legal, Private Investments. Prior to joining PSP Investments, Michaël was Senior Legal Counsel at Quebecor World, and an associate at Norton Rose Fulbright LLP (Montréal) and Muñoz de Toro Abogados (Buenos Aires). Michaël has extensive experience in global business law, M&A, joint ventures, funds, derivatives/securities, private equity, VC, Infrastructure, natural resources, real estate, competition law, governance, and legal operations. He was part of the PSP Investments’ team awarded with the 2010 ILO/ACC Global Counsel Award for best M&A Team. He was also awarded the 2013 Global Counsel Award M&A Individual of the Year Category.
Michaël holds Civil Law, Common Law and legislative and Legal Drafting Graduate degrees from the University of Ottawa. He is a member of the Québec (1999) and Ontario Bar (2002). Michaël is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
